One of the Best Networkers and skilled communicators is my dear friend Debi Hoxter, who runs a consulting firm that provides customized fundraising strategies to fit the unique needs of nonprofit organizations throughout the Greater Philadelphia region. She is a true pro and is a master at building relationships https://www.dhconsultingllc.
We met the first day of college at Washington University and have been friends ever since. She is my guest for this week’s nugget and has great advice on “Networking for Your Dream Job”.
In Debi’s words:
“I recently spoke with a young person who was interested in making a career change but can’t yet define what he wants to do. I shared a strategy that worked for me when I was preparing to make a move and how it led me not only to my dream job, but to nearly 100 new and valuable contacts!
It involves making a list of 5-10 people you trust, setting up morning coffee meetings with each and sharing that you’re in the process of exploring a new career. Tell each of them what you love to do most and ask for their advice (professionals appreciate being asked for advice, and you almost always get at least one valuable “nugget” from these conversations). At the conclusion of each coffee meeting, ask if the person can suggest anyone else who would be helpful to meet with in the field you’re interested in exploring (they will likely offer to make a virtual introduction on your behalf). Andrea’s “thank you chain” process is essential here!
Keep a Google spreadsheet to record every person you meet along your journey including their email, phone and mailing address. When you finally land your dream job, email or hand write a note to each person separately (avoid sending a group email or bcc) and thank them for helping you on your journey. This type of follow-up is always remembered and valued, and these people then become part of your new network!”
