In the current discussion of Microsoft possibly taking over Yahoo, Steve Ballmer was quoted in one of many New York Times articles. As he was discussing his company’s motives, he ‘never once uttered the word Google, referring to the Internet giant only as ‘the leader’ in the on line world.
In my pitching and presentation skills workshops, I always say -never mention the competitor by name. Why put their name into the memory of your client, contact or audience. Keep it generic in discussing others–just be sure to continually mention your firm’s name.
Often when you walk out the door of your client, the competition walks in.Keep your name fresh in their memory.
