When I discuss all types of networking and relationship building—it is all about continually connecting the dots and this brief story sums it up.
In 2003, I was a speaker at FWA- Financial Women’s Association –which is a terrific organization and I support them in every way I can.
In that setting, I met Davina Askin who at the time worked in Diversity at Lehman Brothers.
We spoke briefly- and then a couple of months later, I was called by John Ng who worked there inviting me in. Fast forward, in that meeting, I met seven people… all now at different organizations.
I was a speaker twice in several years and also stayed in touch with John. At that initial meeting, I also met Barbara Berliner now at SEO (Sponsorship for Educational Opportunities) and also have had the great fortune to work with her quite a few times and with her colleagues over the last five years.
Just last week, Jon Ng and I had breakfast and we discussed how Davina was the catalyst—and how terrific she is! I then reconnected them via email and then through another great friend and colleague, Ira Ellman of Capstone found out he knew Davina and we all had breakfast.
This is the true power of ‘networking’—creating and building great connections—of course and yet one very key component and so important is connecting all the dots and making sure to go back to everyone that you met through the person when something occurs to be sure to say thank them.
I know that I have quite a few people to ultimately thank for all the great opportunities that continually happen.
For me—catching up with Davina and learning about her role now in the Girl Scouts of the U.S.A. in Organizational Development was terrific. She is clearly a success story and someone who thinks through the entire process, figures out the procedure and implements it to success.
Also—we found out that she has a very interesting hobby—that of dancing—and specifically The Hustle. I was so intrigued—click here to watch this brief video. It is truly amazing and yes, I’m signing up soon for my first Hustle lesson!!
Again—it is all about connecting and reconnecting the wonderful dots of life
