THE NIERENBERG GROUP
Tip of the Month

June 2009

"Do you remember the things you were worrying about a year ago? How did they work out? Didn't you waste a lot of fruitless energy on account of most of them? Didn't most of them turn out all right after all?"  Dale Carnegie

This quote was picked because of my theme for June’s Tip.

Emotional Time Wasters. We all fall guilty to at least one of them some of the time and maybe several.  Recently I tweeted about this and asked people what they were doing to manage their time and therefore alleviating their stress. It is an interesting thought to ponder.

Here are the Big Five:

  • Indecisiontoo often we waste time by standing in motion.  Take action on something that has been nagging at you. You will feel better and create a next step.

  • Guilt—can be paralyzing. We allow something to play over and over in our heads and often the ‘act’ has been committed.. Whether we are upset because we said something we now regret or something else—instead of stewing—start doing. Write a note of apology, pick up the phone or any other way you can confront the situation. .I know –easier said then done.

  • Worry—I read once that 75% of what we worry about won’t happen and 15% is inevitable. If we must worry, spend 10 minutes a day—worrying and then let it go.

  • Perfectionism—Sometimes we spend so much time trying to make something ‘perfect’—often by the time we send our proposal—our competitor has already won the business. Be thorough, strategic and do your homework –then make it happen. It will never by totally perfect. I’m not talking about typos. That is inexcusable.

  • Procrastination—my definition for this is ‘getting ready to get ready.' We can always find an excuse not to do something. Right now, think of one item that you are procrastinating on and do it before the end of the day. Just start—remember the journey of a thousand miles starts with a single step.

We all know these five emotional time wasters by heart and there is really no way to totally rid ourselves of them. I have decided to work on each of them weekly and keep them up on my computer screen so that I see them and can make sure that I am taking action, realizing I won’t be perfect and I already feel less stressed and more focused on my time management.

I’d like to ask your help on a couple of new things in the Nierenberg Group pipeline:

  • A new book is percolating regarding 'how one uses handwritten and thank you notes to build business and relationships' .

(Send me your story and I will send you a gift)

  • We are thinking seriously of launching a radio show on line and would like your feedback—what would make you tune in?  I will be interviewing wonderful people on some of their success strategies and the network is already filling up. Give us your thoughts: Nierenberg Radio

Remember to discover and use the wonderful tools that make us stay memorable and in front of our customers, clients, contacts and friends all the time.

My two favorites:

  • www.appreciationpower.net   Combine high tech with high touch—anywhere you are in the world- you can send a note, card, gift and personalize it with a few clicks and it goes in the U.S. mail with a first class stamp--a true heartfelt card  is sent to their forgotten physical mailbox.  Take a look and send out a card to anyone you want on my gift account. I welcome you to do so.

  • www.echapterone.com   is a leading Internet based digital bookstore that gives the gift of education With all of the business books published yearly as 'must reads', it makes sense to look for unbiased, professional educated assistance to decide which books to read. In 10 minutes, you can obtain the essence of the book-Marketed under the moniker, Executive Summaries for Leaders™ .  Executive Summaries are focused on global marketing; sales; finance; and organizational leadership, delivering actionable knowledge.  After reading an Executive Summary, you can talk knowledgably about a book, and then make an informed decision whether to buy the book, or save your precious time & money for the next important action item. There are some other great opportunities also with this tool. Call or email me to find out.

With both of these terrific systems that I use and love—let me answer any questions, concerns
or thoughts you may have..

Have a wonderful month and I am sure to have some news from abroad in our July tip.

Experience is a hard teacher because she gives the test first, the lesson afterwards.
