Tip of the Month

August 2008

"The time to repair the roof is when the sun is shining." John F. Kennedy

Recently I was asked how to keep your job or grow your business in this economy. I thought about the fact, that many of us have "weathered" the storm before and here are some tips to keep in mind and apply to your situation:

  1. Be visible and create opportunities to be seen.  Get out of your office and reconnect with internal colleagues and those on the outside. Make it a point to communicate "person to person" when you can.

  2. Continually reinvent and re-brand yourself. The only constant we have is "change". Find ways to recreate yourself even if you are already terrific! Expand your services. Find opportunities to increase your "profit value" to your employer or organization.
  3. Stay in touch consistently with your different "networks" of colleagues so that you stay top of mind. One tool I use is Google Alerts.
  4. Create and build core advocates, alliances and build on your synergies. This is key to everything. If I brag about myself -"it is bragging"...when my trusted alliance or advocate brags about me-it becomes credibility. This takes time and consistent effort and work. It is golden over time. Make sure to give credibility daily to those advocates and alliances in your life.

  5. Do the unexpected-really "listen" to people and therefore you will continue to surprise them by remembering what they said and how you have put their advice into action.

  6. Follow up and go the extra mile. After all is said and done, "much more is said than done." Do what you say and even do more. It gets noticed.

  7. “Position” yourself well. How do you wish to be remembered by others and what are your doing to continually create that aura. Make sure to focus.

  8. Know your company, your industry and your clients well. Research every day so that you are always a couple of steps ahead of the competition.

  9. Continue to re-access your strengths, talents and skills. Be indispensable Study and grow.

  10. Everyday make sure you learn something new and put it into practice and action.

These tips may sound simple and are common sense, however putting them in to action will produce the results over time.
